Saltwater fishing in Alaska is much different than warmer destinations. We do have shore fishing, mostly for returning salmon, but sea-run Dolly Varden are available in certain locations. Flounders, small Irish Lords, and baby halibut can also be caught casting from shore, but difficult to target. If you have access to a skiff, that opens up many more possibilities as you can get out to deeper water without worrying about the dangers of open water.
Open water is a different story. Stout rods (9 to 13wts) with super heavy lines are your best bet when you’re trying to get a fly down 30 to 70 feet. Also flies that are super heavy and swim with a jigging action will help your catching. (This is definitely falls into the “Chuck & Duck” category of fishing.)
There’s not a lot of Alaska specific saltwater patterns, so this page shows some of the patterns have proved themselves in fishing situations.
